From that Thonga
Dathonga was born from a profound personal discovery.
For years I was fascinated by the work of Paulus Gerdes, a leading investigator of African ethnomathematics. But it was during a collaborative study he did with Oxford University students that the abstract became personal: I realised that the patterns in my own grandmother’s baskets held an ancient, sophisticated knowledge of geometry.
This insight ignited my mission, to show the world that math is not just a textbook concept, but a powerful, living part of our cultural identity.
Born from the Thonga
The name Dathonga, meaning “from that Thonga”, is a nod to my Bitonga roots. My story begins in Inhambane, the Land of Good People, where my creative spirit was nurtured. My mother, a talented seamstress, taught me the poetry of form and art, while my father, a mechanic, instilled in me a deep respect for nature, structure and hard work.
In the rural landscapes of Mozambique, I watched my grandmother transform wild fibres into objects of immense utility and complex symmetry. To the world she was a crafter. To me, she was my first engineering mentor.
At Dathonga we bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and modern living. From the intricate geometry of Sipatsi and Titja to the raw art of wood turning, our designs are a tribute to the intellectual sovereignty of Mozambique’s artisans. We are picking up the threads exactly where they were cut.
“Until the world can look at a woman in rural Mozambique and see a structural engineer and a designer, the decolonization of art remains unfinished. We are not just giving work; we are reclaiming intellectual sovereignty.”

Preserving traditions
We believe our traditions are living treasures. We’re on a mission to breathe new life into Mozambican traditional crafts, ensuring the invaluable skills, intricate techniques and timeless wisdom behind them are not just remembered, but actively celebrated and passed on through generations.
Sustainable sourcing
We draw endless inspiration from the breathtaking tapestry of the African wilds, from our pristine coastlines to the expansive savannas. We create unique products using locally sourced materials, ensuring a harmonious relationship with our environment. Sustainability isn’t just a word for us; it’s the heart of every single practice.
Empowering communities
Dathonga is a vibrant story of women’s strength, resilience and artistry. We work hand in hand with rural Mozambican women artisans, providing crucial support for their livelihoods and passionately preserving the rich cultural heritage that defines our nation.
